i have a problem...ive found myself getting better and better at the technical aspects of pinstriping, but im still having a hard time coming up with nice looking, complicated designs
seeing as i want to try to do some pinstriping at the local car shows and cruise nights this summer, i have to start cracking on this aspect of it all
any help, ideas, advice would be appriciated

well coming up with designs is tough to explain its not that hard, I try to follow a few basic concepts that I like.
First if you have an idea of other peoples designs u like try to decide why u like them until you like your own.
If you play around with alot of designs you will find out what looks good and what does not, a good tip someone gave is try to make one connected line for a single color of designs don't have alot of lines that start and stop that aren't connected sometimes it is ok to have seperate shapes and lines but it normally looks better if they are connected.
Try to stop and look at your design and strive for balance. Like You don't want all straight lines you want a balance of curves and straighter lines and balance in color of course.
It's also good to use some repeating shapes in progressively smaller sizes because that normaly is pleasing to the eye and looks less random than a jumble of lines.
when adding a second color over a design I try to follow some of the existing lines of the first color but also try to deviate from them in spots to create a complexity of design without taking away or covering up the first color.
All these things are pretty simple and may be common sense but I hope this might help some, the beauty of pinstriping is there aren't really any rules but to make something u like u have to really think hard sometimes about what u wanna do with a design to make it look good. |

the best way to get design ideas, is to study some of your favorite stripers, and figure out what some of their favorite brush stokes are, and then add those different stroke to your own repitrair(SP?)
For example, I have set my screen saver to the file i saved all the pics of some of my favorite pinstrippings in. In that fiule i have a lot of Alteredpilots stuff, Empire 32, PPoC, Kasper, El Vago, etc, etc, etc ,etc, and just random things ive found on Sketch kult
and eventually you will see designs in your minds eye when you try to sleep

i just like to see where a design will take me. start off with a tear drop shape or triangle or whatever and then add a line to one side ...do the same on the other, add a lond curved line repeat etc, etc, and just let it unfold. but generally i think ryanlashs' advice is bang on. you acn also try drawing some out but this has never worked for me because i can't draw striping worth a shit.hope this helps. _________________ ALWAYS, keep on...keepin on!

Thats it.Practice hundreds of hours, and you will see them in your sleep. And your mind will become in tune with this art.Cars also help you decide as well as the owner. If you aint ready you aint ready keep practicing.I didnt go public for four years. This art is fun but very seious as well.
Keep painting.Go to the MackBrush Hall of Fame and look at all 100 or so pics everyday.Seriously.It has been there for ever and though i wish they would updaye it is the best of the best.(well some of it) _________________ www.myspace.com/fairlinekustom |

| get a notebook and sketch out a new design on every page. If you have trouble creating new stuff start by immitating designs you like. Later you can build on design elements from other completed designs to create totally new ones. after a while you will be able to just flow with a design from seemingly nowhere and when you are stumped you will have a notebook to fall back on for inspiration. I hope this helps. |
