I would advise using aluminum, white gold or palladium leaf, because genuine silver leaf with tarnish and turn black on surface, it works great for inside on windows. All three of the leafs I suggested look like silver and with not tarnish outside

silver leaf will turn colour if its not sealed....i do use it, but i also brush on some 1-shot clear over top, to help seal it in....aluminum leaf works too..and its dirt cheap..i think like $7 a book...its more durable..but i still paint on clear after...

here are some scallops i did on the weekend, in silver leaf...

i would also suggest using a slow size..like rolco....it gives you a longer window when laying down leaf...

I guess I'll be the first to answer your specific question.

Prepping is the same for the leaf as it is for your striping, just give it the same solvent and make sure all the dirt, grease and wax is removed. My personal opinion for prep is Rapid-Prep, a water based solvent and the reason I use this is because it leaves no residue behind and works in 30 seconds. Afterwards, run your hand on the prepped area to make sure it isn't slick.

For vehicles I use Wonda, a quick water based size for both aluminum and veriagated leaf and for real gold, a slow size as the slow size gives it a shinier surface after burnishing.

I too use aluminum leaf and always clear coat leaf done on vehicles. For clear I use PPG concept, a 2 part clear coat brushed on with a step up in number so the clear covers the leaf the first run and use a Kafka scroll or sword so I can follow quickly the same as my lines.

Did anyone say the striping in the pics is killer?

As it's a porsche, keep the lines thin and classy, other than that, I echo Joey's advice....
