WANT TO START TATTOOING...(READ THIS FIRST)

I just got a huck spaulding tattoo set and have been learning all I can but I have 2 big questions.

1) I have been using fake skin to practice . Is there anything better besides friends to practice on.

2)I have the powersupply that huck spaulding sells with most of there kits and it has a dial that goes from 1-10, my instinct tells me to go to 11 but I figure maybe someone knows the settings for lining verses shading.

Any little bit helps even if it's just your personnal preference.

power settings depend on how you tune your machines and what you are using them for. Go to a local shop and inquire about an apprenticeship and don't even mention Spaulding and Rogers to them... there is so much more to tattooing than you can get in a kit... knowledge is the most important tool a tattooer can have and they don't sell that in any kit.

I contemplated the tattoo kit self teaching road but after talking with a few tattoo studios I learned fast how that road nowadays will get you further away from achieving your end goal, which is to become a tattoo artist. Being a self taught labels you a scratcher and limits your possibilities at working in a pro shop.
There are trade secrets that are never included in the home kits and most tattooists will only hand down and teach that info in a tattoo shop environment. I suggest if you really want to make a commitment into learning how to tattoo then seek out an apprenticeship-you'll learn way more than teaching yourself the wrong way, and not to mention all the friends you'll practice on/scarring trying to get it down.

I think also the chance for diease transmission is greatly increased.
before anything you should learn about blood bourne pathogens and how with that "tattoo kit " you could really destroy lives...save your money and spend it on regular art supply and make some awesome tattoo flash instead, create a nice portfolio and dazzle the hell outta the person you want to study under Smile

Thanks for the advice. I had started an appretticeship but had to move so my wife could finish her degree. Unfortunatly my friend Sam set up the equipment and stood over my shoulder and talked me through it all. I was so caught up in not going to deep or making shakey lines i never focused on how fast the machine was going. I'd love to have an apprenticeship but I have a full time job as a graphic artist and a family so my weekends are all the time I have , not to mention I'm 31 now. I must say the kit did come with a pretty good book that focused way more on safeyt and sterilization and possible diseases more than actually tattooing. I may take a vacation this summer and go to "tattoo school" in NY or Michigan.

Mono, I give a class every year (August this year I think) only 4 members per class. Call me for details...Also call me if you need help 516 623 5665.

If all you have are weekends, then find somebody that will accomodate. I don't know of a shop anywhere that's not open on saturdays. Knowledge is the key here and without it bad bad things can happen not to mention the liability end of what we do. Say a person you tattooed gets an infection and hires a lawyer. If you do not know the right answers a lawyer will eat you alive. Disease transmission is a serious issue in regards to tattooing. Not just from the tattoo, but everything that gets touched while your hands are contaminated. The dangers are endless if the correct precautions are not taken to ensure everyone involved's safety.

I have just taken my long service leave, 3 months paid and am approaching all the shops and artists I know to try and see if i can work in the shop, dont even need to be paid Smile

, look and learn will be plenty, the end objective is to get an apprenticeship.
63 letters went in the mail introducing myself this week.

In 2 weeks i go to piercing school as well, its run by one of the busiest piercing/tattoo shops in my area, im hoping this will also be an in to a shop possibly.. im 35, its time to live my dreams

that's the only way to learn properly. there is alot more to it then making a permanent mark. he first needs to be educated about the medical side of tattooing before he touches a machine. does he know how to properly clean and sterilize his equiptment? does he know how to prevent the spread of blood bourne pathogens? how about cross contamination?

i don't mean to preach, but going out and buying equiptment is not the way to learn.

Get an apprenticeship! It may take a while but will be well worth it. Cross contamination and sterile equipment is an absolute must. Boiling your equipment doesnt do shit...you need to be properly trained or you can seriously f@ck alot of people up. Happened here in Columbus last year, dudes is going to jail for quite some time. He started the spread of an airborne staph infection that killed a child.
Then there is the whole application of a tattoo, and then....etc
I stand behind the apprenticeship method.
